Course summary

Our Secondary PGCE programme is designed to prepare you to teach your specialist subject to students aged 11-16 or 14-19. The course is structured to provide a blend of academic study and practical experience, ensuring you develop both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for a successful teaching career. Led by experienced senior lecturers (who are qualified teachers with extensive teaching experience) and supported by a network of schools and colleges, our programme aims to help you meet the Teachers’ Standards and achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

About this course

The PGCE year is divided into several key phases, each focusing on different aspects of your professional development. After an initial three weeks at the university, the first placement begins at the end of September from Tuesday to Friday, with Mondays dedicated to university-based training. These university sessions are balanced between collective sessions (which include all PGCE Secondary subjects) and subject-specific sessions. Towards the end of the training, your school placement days will increase to five days for at least six weeks.

Placement Schedule

  • First Placement: Begins in September and runs until the start of February, allowing you to apply your initial training in a real classroom setting.
  • Second Placement: Starts in February and continues until June, providing an extended period to develop and refine your teaching practice.

Part-time route

  • Part-time trainees begin with enrolment and initial contact sessions, similar to full-time trainees. From the end of September, part-time trainees attend university sessions on Mondays, with two days in placement each week. Starting in May, trainees will then complete three days in placement until the end of June. This three-day placement schedule continues from September until the following February.

Entry requirements

For all PGCE Secondary specialisms you will normally need:

  • GCSEs at grade 4 (previously C) or above (or equivalent) in English (Language or Literature) and Mathematics. Please see our list of accepted equivalents.
  • A relevant honours degree at a 2:2 classification or above. (Where the degree result is to be awarded in the year of application, we will require a predicted degree classification as part of an academic reference provided on the application)
  • Experience – please see below information below
  • Declaration of Health
  • DBS (formerly the CRB) Enhanced Disclosure

Modules in or closely related to the subject being applied for will typically need to form at least 50% of the degree content.

When shortlisting for interview, we will consider the following aspects of your qualifications:

  • GCSE grades (or equivalents) and relevance of subjects
  • A Level grades (or equivalents) and relevance of subjects
  • Degree Class and relevance of content
  • Additional relevant qualifications

Experience

Experience in a relevant setting is useful as it will help you to make sure that you are aware of the role of a teacher in the twenty-first century. We encourage you to gain some experience in schools as this is a good starting point for you to gain an interview for the Secondary PGCE.

Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) and Declaration of Health

All students will need to pay for an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), formerly the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). A successful Enhanced Disclosure is required before commencing the course.

In addition, you will be required to obtain a satisfactory Declaration of Health Form, or if required, a medical examination.

In accordance with University conditions, students are entitled to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning, RP(C)L, based on relevant credit at another HE institution or credit Awarded for Experiential Learning, (RP(E)L).

How you will be taught

You will be taught by a range of academic staff within the PGCE Secondary team as well as having a subject specific course lead as your university-based mentor. Within each school placement you will also be assigned a school-based mentor.

Collective Sessions (at university):

  • These sessions bring together all PGCE Secondary trainees and cover broad educational topics relevant to all subjects. They include lectures, workshops, and group discussions led by experienced educators and guest speakers.

Subject-Specific Sessions (at university):

  • These sessions focus on the specific pedagogical and content knowledge required for your specialist subject. They include hands-on activities, practical demonstrations, and subject-specific teaching strategies led by subject specific experts. A significant number of hours are spent within subject-specific sessions.

Intensive Training and Practice (ITAP) (at university and within school placement):

  • ITAP sessions are intensive, focused training days that cover essential teaching skills such as behaviour management, lesson planning, and adaptive teaching. These sessions are designed to provide deep dives into critical areas of teaching practice. ITAPs often include practical workshops and teaching simulations to help you practise and refine your skills in a controlled environment.

School Placements:

  • Placements are a crucial part of your training, providing real-world teaching experience in schools. You will start with four days per week in placement, increasing to five days towards the end of the course.
  • During placements, you will receive support and guidance from school-based mentors who will help you apply your university learning in the classroom.

Independent Study:

  • You will have designated time for independent study, allowing you to complete assignments, reflect on your practice, and engage with additional resources.

Assessment

Your progress is assessed using our ADEPT Curriculum throughout the year, and at the end of the year, you are specifically evaluated against The Teachers' Standards.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways during the year, you will:

  • engage in a range of self-assessment and reflection activities
  • have formal and informal observations of your teaching practice
  • keep an electronic record of your progress accessed by your mentors
  • give presentations to your peers in micro teaching sessions and during EDI week
  • You will also complete two 5000 words level 7 assignments:

701- This assignment involves creating a portfolio based on classroom observations and critical reflections. Trainees will explore how theory meets practice by focusing on specific themes: behaviour management, pedagogy, assessment, wider professionalism, or curriculum.

702- Trainees are required to conduct a small-scale research project exploring an area of their classroom practice. They identify an issue to improve, which could be based on lesson observations, progress reviews, or reflective analysis and then complete their research project within their second placement.

As a PGCE Secondary student, you could be eligible for a bursary of up to £29,000 depending on your specialist subject and eligibility for student finance. Full details for bursaries and scholarships please visit the DfE's page here.

Typically, for 2025-2026, international trainees are only usually eligible for bursaries when training to teach languages and physics. For other subjects, this depends on if you are eligible for student finance and if you have settled status in the UK.

Our ADEPT Curriculum (Ambitious, Diverse, Evidence based and Professionally Transformative) has four distinct phases for the duration of the course.

Professional Preparation (September)

    • Time: Three weeks in the university setting.
    • Focus: Trainees as learners
    • Activities: Introduction to the curriculum, understanding educational theories, and initial subject-specific training. Typical key sessions include "What is education?", "How do children learn?", and "Pedagogy & practice".

Professional Development (October - December)

    • Focus: Pupils as learners
    • Activities: Classroom management, lesson planning, and understanding pupil progress. This phase includes significant time spent in university for collective sessions and subject group work. Key topics covered include behaviour management workshops, inclusion and aspiration, and specific educational needs such as ADHD and dyslexia.

Professional Enhancement (January - June)

    • Focus: Advanced teaching practices and professional growth
    • Activities: In-depth subject-specific training, advanced pedagogical strategies, and consideration of the professional identity. Typical key sessions include "Numeracy across the curriculum", "Measuring pupil progress", and "Literacy and Oracy".
    • This phase also includes the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion week in February. This week aims to support trainee teachers’ professional commitment to equality in education through enhancing their knowledge and understanding of diversity and inclusive teaching practices, to meet the needs of all pupils. Professional Enrichment (June)

  • Focus: Wider professional and pastoral development
  • Activities: Enrichment activities and opportunities to explore teaching beyond the traditional classroom setting. Trainees typically participate in specialised sessions such as understanding systematic synthetic phonics, trans awareness, SEND education, and making the most of social media as educators. Outside speakers visit to discuss teaching and learning in alternative provision (with the opportunity to take part in micro-placements to visit these settings).

On this course we begin with the three components of English: reading, writing, and spoken word. Being a science teacher allows you to share your passion for science with young people, harnessing their natural curiosity for the world around them. Whether it is Physics, Chemistry or Biology that is your specialism, training to be a teacher of science is a privilege.

The PGCE in secondary science considers all aspects of teaching and learning in the secondary science classroom. You will learn subject specific skills such as how to use analogies to explain difficult scientific concepts, what barriers students might need help overcoming and how to safely manage the practical science classroom. Whilst you may have a science specialism, you will learn the skill of how to teach all three sciences to Key Stage 4.

The course is delivered using a variety of methods including practical sessions, discussion, taught sessions, a field trip and more. The university sessions are a great way to discuss ideas and find solutions with fellow trainees and your University Based Mentor.
