When BGU’s undergraduate Archaeology course first began, Dr Julian Richards gave the first public talk at the launch of the programme. To celebrate the upcoming ten year anniversary, Dr Julian Richards has been invited back to campus to deliver a talk.

Dr Julian Richards FSA is a UK based archaeologist, author and broadcaster. He has been involved in studying Stonehenge and its surrounding landscape for over 40 years and is the author of a number of publications, including the current English Heritage guidebook to the monument.

Currently, he is filming a documentary series exploring the whole history of Stonehenge.

Due to take place on Tuesday 11th March at 5pm in the Robert Hardy lecture theatre, Dr Richards – who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the university, is scheduled to discuss his paper, entitled ‘Stonehenge – old rocks, new theories’.

Throughout the talk, Julian will explore Stonehenge, arguably the most famous stone circle in the world. Starting with an examination of its unique structure, he will explore the big questions: How it was built, who built it and, perhaps the most intriguing – why?

Derwin Gregory, Programme Leader of Archaeology & Heritage and Military History at BGU, explained more about the celebratory talk: “While exploring past ideas, Julian will draw on recent discoveries and the results of new scientific analysis to offer our current understanding of this enigmatic monument to the beliefs and ingenuity of our ancient ancestors.

We are thrilled to be hosting this upcoming lecture and invite staff, students, the BGU community and members of the public to join us in celebrating this wonderful achievement.”
