From Saturday 9th to Saturday 16th November, our staff and students will be offering a free programme of creative and video game workshops, film screenings, and an interactive reading group.

Encompassing the theme of Lincolnshire Landmarks, the festival invites the local community of all ages to get involved in celebrating the county’s cultural heritage.

Being Human is the UK's national festival of the humanities and aims to open up and highlight the importance of humanities research. It showcases how humanities inspire and enrich our everyday lives, help us to understand ourselves, our relationships with others, and the challenges we face in a changing world.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the festival. Through a competitive application process, 32 funding grants have been awarded to researchers at universities across the UK. The grant enables free public engagement activities to take place as part of the festival. We are thrilled that BGU is one of the awarded universities.

Professor Andrew Jackson, Executive Dean of Research and Knowledge Exchange, said: “Bishop Grosseteste University is delighted to be participating and supporting the Being Human Festival again this year.

“It is a great opportunity for BGU to share its interdisciplinary expertise, the commitment of our humanities department and external partners to public and community engagement, alongside the special resources of our Lincoln campus.”

Led by staff and students in our English, Archaeology, and Military History departments, there is a week of planned activities for the local community, to explore Lincolnshire Landmarks in connection to wellbeing, historical heritage and the creative power of reading and writing.

Our programme starts and ends with Twinning Landmarks, two, one-day creative workshops for Ukrainian refugees, inviting them to explore Ukrainian and Lincolnshire landmarks.

Claudia Capancioni, Professor of English Literature at BGU, gives an insight into the workshop: “The workshop will have opportunities for participants to engage with both creative writing and art therapy and be supported by academics and an art therapist.

“The creations of the participants will be part of a future publication that aims to create new twinning landmarks between the two communities, bringing to light individual experiences.”

All of the events are free and have been made possible thanks to the support of Greenwich Leisure Limited, Lincolnshire Libraries, Lincoln Central Library, Ermine Library, Lincolnshire Co-op, The Venue, and City of Lincoln Council.
