In the wake of World Book Day, our undergraduate Early Childhood Studies (ECS) students welcomed children from Mount Street Academy in Lincoln to a reading session at our on campus library.

Accompanied by their teachers and parent volunteers, three groups of reception aged children were, firstly, introduced to the library by our ECS students.

Following this, the children were given the opportunity to explore the books available throughout the Teaching Resources Centre part of the library. Our students enjoyed the chance to look at the resources with the children, share stories, and view the books through the eyes of the children they are written for.

Alison Riley, Programme Leader for Early Childhood Students at BGU, said: “The Teacher Resource Centre in the Cornerstone building is a fantastic resource that would be a shame not to share with the local community.

“Seeing children interact with the books was a pleasure, since we believe that engendering a love of reading can provide a foundation for lifelong learning, nurturing imagination and building essential language skills.”

A representative from Mount Street Academy, said: “The children had a wonderful time and have left with a lot more knowledge on books and libraries.

“Thank you once again from the entire team here at Mount Street.”

Alongside this drop-in session, our academics run a Reading Buddies scheme to further enhance our students’ placement experiences; they are invited to share stories with small groups of children at St Giles Nursery School throughout the year.

Alison continues: “These sessions are important for our students as it affords them the opportunity to interact with children in a setting outside of the classroom.

“Reading with children is an essential skill for students to develop, from selecting the right story to reading it in a way that engages and inspires children. Opportunities like this bring to life the content covered in our taught sessions.”
