In December 2024, Dr Nicki Walsh, Programme Leader for Health and Social Care at BGU, presented at Advance HE’s NET Conference.

As the leading, international conference for networking in healthcare education, collaborations here have resulted in developments in both research and education.

During this most recent conference, attendees explored: the innovation of healthcare education, the role of digital practices including artificial intelligence (AI), creativity and sustainability within healthcare education delivery and a variety of aspects of the student experience.

Nicki shared more about the topic of presentation: “I presented PhD findings which unpicked the challenging dynamics within continuous professional development (CPD), with a focus on nurses working within UK General Practice – alongside their experiences of CPD with regard to the rapidly increasing issue of Diabetes.

“This sparked a dynamic discussion around the challenges of education for healthcare professionals.”

Secondly, Lorena (Lori) Hall, Health and Social Care Lecturer at BGU, presented at two conferences at the end of 2024.

Lori presented at The Collaboration for Compassion in Healthcare Education. She said: “Compassion can be and has been perceived as, an optional element of healthcare education – yet compassion is also perceived as an essential component of humane and efficient healthcare.”

This event was the fifth conference of its kind, aiming to look at how this disconnect might be addressed and how the recent increase in research and interest in compassionate practice education can be consolidated, disseminated and amplified for greater impact.

Lori’s presentation included talking about her personal story, how this related to her professional practice and her current work as an educator in higher education.

Alongside this, Lori presented a poster at the Seattle Club Conference at Kings College London, which focused on loss and loneliness for people with learning disabilities – with a primary objective of creating accessible communication within academia.
