The PG Cert In General Practice Nursing is a specialised Master's level Programme to which will provide Registered Healthcare Professionals, who are currently working in the Primary Care (General Practice) setting, with a learner-centred and practice-focused programme of study, meeting their personal, professional and practice development needs.

To do this it will support students to develop a range of skills essential for today’s General Practice environment. It will provide an opportunity to critically review their own practice, but also enable review of current provision, thus ensuring that it too is contextually ‘fit for purpose’.

It aims to produce high-calibre postgraduates who are autonomous, reflexive, possessing of inquiring and analytical minds as part of their continued professional development required by their relevant Professional Regulatory body.

The course will support students’ professional prospects, by adding quality to the care they provide, and will promote their continued study at doctoral level and beyond. The curriculum design focuses on both professional and service requirements supported by key generic competencies which cross all modules:

  • Autonomous practice
  • Critical thinking
  • High levels of problem solving and decision making
  • Values based care
  • Practice improvement and innovation
  • Clinical Leadership and management

Nicki Walsh, Senior lecturer (and Programme Lead for Health and Social Care) in the School of Social Science at BGU, explained why the qualification is such an exciting opportunity for healthcare professionals:

“With an ever growing and evolving health service there is an absolute need for a workforce, which is well equipped, competent and confident in their delivery. This new certificate will not only allow healthcare professionals to gain new skills, it will provide them with the ability to confidently and critically examine the service they are a part of meaning they can become a driving force of positive change within it”

The new PG Cert In General Practice Nursing joins the developing portfolio within the School of Social Science at BGU which reflects current and future needs of the health and social care sector. Other current courses include Master's in Health & Social Care Leadership and Primary & Community Care.
