In December, BGU students studying on our single and combined SENDI degrees, embarked on a fieldtrip to the UK’s capital – to explore the perception of disability within society.

Their trip saw a visit to an exhibition at The Wellcome Collection entitled Jason and the adventure of 254, which focused on how society perceives disability.

The exhibition is described as a joyful exploration of the body, drawing on the artist’s experience of becoming disabled as a child.

The students were accompanied by SENDI Programme Leader Julia Lindley-Baker and SENDI Lecturer Rebecca Fielden.

Within modules on our SENDI degrees, our students study the concept of Hidden Inequalities.

Rebecca shared further insight on this: “It is important for our students to explore and critique perceptions and conceptualisations of disability and how this relates to the inclusion, or exclusion, of individuals in society.

Trips such as this provide our students with the opportunity to understand in a broader sense, how disability is represented in society. There is only so much you can learn in a classroom!”

A student on the trip commented on the positives they gained from the experience: "The Wellcome Collection was thought provoking and gave lots of useful insight into the lives of others and potential topics for assignments.

“The entire trip itself helped us to consider the accessibility of the museum and travel overall, as we looked for signs of inclusivity.

“Thank you, Becky and Julia, for a lovely day out!"
