What it means to be human explored in new publication

Titled Robert Grosseteste and theories of Education: the Ordered Human, the book comes from a team of academics and educationalist, medievalist and modern scientists from BGU, Durham and Oxford universities who are working together as part of the Ordered Human Project.

Utilising the discoveries of 13th Century theologian and scientist Robert Grosseteste they have been exploring ideas on how and why we learn. And despite the fact his discoveries are over 700 years old, the team believe the Bishop’s interesting and individual ideas about how we learn and what happens to us when we do have a great deal to tell us about modern educational processes.

In addition to exploring those discoveries and their impact the team are also hopeful that the publication will shine a new light on the work and accomplishments of Robert Grosseteste and help give him a permanent place in modern educational discussion as Dr Jack Cunningham, Reader in Ecclesiastical History and Programme Leader for Theology at BGU and one of the publication’s editors, discussed at the launch:

“One of the big discussions in academia is what education is and what it could, and should, be used for. This is an area in which Bishop Grosseteste has a number of extremely interesting viewpoints, and while much has been said about his scientific work, his discoveries in education are equally fascinating. Bringing them into mainstream educational discussion has been one of the core goals of this collaborative project and it’s been a fantastic opportunity to work with an expert in both medieval and modern specialities.”

His words were echoed by fellow editor Dr Steven Puttick, Associate Professor of Teacher Education at Oxford University, who added:

“These are eternal questions about what it means to be human and how engaging with education can help us become more human”
