New student accommodation completed!
Work has now finished on a new £4.3m student residence on Bishop Grosseteste University’s campus on Longdales Road in Lincoln. The new accommodation replaces the existing Wickham hall of residence, which is currently being demolished. The Constance Stewart halls of residence will also be renovated as part of the scheme. “Once this new development is complete we will have 126 en suite rooms on campus, which we haven’t had before,” said Stephen Deville, Director of Resources at Bishop Grosseteste University. Mr Deville added that while the halls of residence are being improved, the number of undergraduate students at the university will remain the same. “Strict government controls on student numbers at all universities mean we have no plans to increase undergraduate student numbers for the foreseeable future,” he said. “However, this new development will give us a good mix of accommodation to offer to students and improve our ability to accommodate conference visitors when the students are not here.” An album of photographs of the new accommodation can be seen on our Facebook page, here: New accommodation photo album on BGULincoln Facebook. -

Doors Open at BGU
Students thinking about going to university can look round brand new facilities and hear about new courses at a Bishop Grosseteste University open day this Sunday (6th October). The university has spent £4.3 million on a new accommodation building this summer as part of a £6.5m investment programme. Visitors to the open day between 11am and 4pm on Sunday can see the new student residences at first hand and find out more about the courses on offer. These include new single honours degrees in History and SENI (Special Educational Needs and Inclusion) and a new Psychology degree course which enrolled its first students this year. Visitors to the open day will be able to speak to staff and students, go on a guided tour of the campus and even enjoy a minibus tour of Lincoln city centre. There will be a rolling programme of presentations, DVDs and one-to-one meetings and visitors are encouraged to drop in at any time throughout the day. New look at BGU as students arrive on campus
Students arriving for the start of the new academic year at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln this week have found that a number of improvements have been made to the campus. The university has spent around £6.5 million over the summer on upgrading accommodation, catering facilities and learning spaces. A new modern accommodation facility for 126 students has replaced an older hall of residence, and together with the extensive refurbishment of Constance Stewart Hall has resulted in a net increase in rooms on campus of 23. The dining facilities in Constance Stewart Hall are being replaced by a new building closer to the new accommodation block and the university’s quirky Alice in Wonderland-themed café Curiositea has been refurbished and enlarged. On the teaching side a new Psychology lab has been created for students who are enrolling for the first time on BGU’s psychology degree course, which can be studied in conjunction with a number of different subjects. The £6.5m investment is the latest stage in a programme of improvements at Bishop Grosseteste University. Last year £2.5m was invested in an extension to the library – the Cornerstone Building- which is now home to Library Services and the Student Support and Learning Advice teams. A £250,000 project to remodel the campus main entrance and reception area was also completed last year and £75,000 was spent on converting Bishop Greaves Theatre into The Venue, a state-of-the-art digital cinema which can also stage theatrical productions. “We have a beautiful campus in uphill Lincoln but we never stand still and we are always looking at ways in which we can improve the student experience here,” said Stephen Deville, Director of Resources at Bishop Grosseteste University. “Students are very discerning these days and we’re confident that the investments we’ve made on campus in recent years will make BGU a very attractive destination for them.” -
Pedal Powering Through London for BGU
Two colleagues from Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln will be using pedal power to raise money for the university’s Foundation Fund this weekend. Accommodation Officer Rachel Crane and Leanne Chancellor, Executive Assistant to the Deputy Vice Chancellor, will take part in the London Nightrider – a 100km moonlit overnight cycle ride through the centre of London on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June 2015. Around 4,500 cyclists will raise more than £2 million for charity in one night and take in over 50 famous landmarks, including Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, the Royal Opera House and the London Eye. Rachel and Leanne will be raising money for the BG Foundation Fund, which provides funds for projects which the university would not normally be able to support through its core funding. “I had the original idea as I’m a runner and wanted to challenge my fitness further,” said Rachel. “I asked my friend and colleague, Leanne, if she wanted to join me, and as she was looking for her first challenge she agreed – although she actually thought I meant the London Moonwalk!” Rachel and Leanne can be found in the university gym most lunchtimes and they began training for the event in September last year. The ride will begin at 10.35pm at the Lee Valley Velodrome, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London and after following a circular route in and out of the city will finish back at the Lee Valley Velodrome. If you would like to sponsor the pair please visit their JustGiving page. -
New Lease of Life for Former Connie’s Restaurant at BGU
A former canteen and dining room at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln is being turned into much needed teaching accommodation as the institution gears up for an increase in students. BGU is spending £850,000 on converting the former Connie’s dining room and kitchen into an academic facility. The refurbishment project will create seven multi-functional, flexible teaching spaces on the ground floor of the building which will be ready for use in September 2015. The university’s strategic plan envisages a growth in student numbers and BGU is also broadening the range of courses it offers, introducing Business (Team Entrepreneurship), Health and Social Care, Sociology, Psychology, Counselling and History and Archaeology from September. Part of the new teaching facility will be used by staff and students on the university’s new Business (Team Entrepreneurship) degree course. “In the past Connie’s was the place where our students who lived on campus had their meals, but now we’ve moved to self-catering accommodation and opened the Refectory to cater for the changing demand,” said Fred Robson, Head of Estates at BGU. “We no longer need this catering space so we’re converting the building to give us additional teaching space as we grow our student numbers.” The work, which entails some minor demolition and re-roofing of the former kitchen, is being undertaken by the main contractor, Robert Woodhead Ltd from Mansfield. -

Bus to inspire young people to enter higher education during tour of Lincolnshire
The LiNCHigher team will be travelling across the length and breadth of the county this July, making stops at schools and community locations, in an unmissable double decker bus. The team are expecting to meet at least 1,000 young people and their influencers on their nine day tour and will be offering exciting activities, workshops and the opportunity to ask questions about further and higher education options. In Lincolnshire, young people are less likely to go into higher education than in other areas of the country despite similar GCSE results. LiNCHigher works across Lincolnshire as part of the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP), funded by the Office for Students (OfS), to change this. It brings together Bishop Grosseteste University and the University of Lincoln with 45 schools, colleges and other local organisations to give inspiration, increase aspiration and support young people in years 9-13 to plan their future education. The LiNCHigher bus will give these young people an opportunity to participate in social media and cyber safety workshops, produce a podcast and explore their dreams and aspirations to help them make decisions about future courses and jobs. Naomi Prendergast, LiNCHigher Project Manager, said, “Our team is passionate about helping young people to realise their aspirations and our area engagement officers work in schools throughout the year. The last week of term is a great time to offer fun activities and leave young people with positive messages to take away for the summer. We’re also really looking forward to meeting everyone at our weekend stops too. Lincolnshire is a large county so we wanted to make it easy for young people and their families by bringing the bus to them. Pop in for a chat, have a go at the activities and pick up a goody bag!” LiNCHigher will be running a competition during the bus tour and will be offering the chance every day to win a VIP trip to a UK university or further education of their choice*. Entrants will need to spot and take a photo of the LiNCHigher bus and share on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #spotthebus. Follow the LiNCHigher social media pages for more information. BGU Enquiries Team launch hotline to support you through Clearing
With Results Day next Thursday, everyone at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) hopes you get the results you need to get into your first choice university, allowing you to sit back, relax and get excited about starting your adventure. If you don’t get the results you require you may need to go through Clearing, which offers students who have not yet secured a place the opportunity to apply for ones that are still available. The Clearing process can seem daunting and stressful but the Enquiries Team at BGU are doing everything they can to ensure that process is smooth and hassle-free. Dedicated Phone Line Often one of the most comforting things when dealing with unexpected changes is being able to talk directly to someone (rather than filling out online forms or dealing answer machines). That is why from 8 am on the morning of Clearing until 10 pm, members of the Enquiries Team will be manning the phone lines to make sure you can quickly get the support you need. The Hotline number is (01522) 583698 and through it, you’ll not only be able to get all your Clearing questions answered, but you may also be able to sort a university place for yourself. WhatsApp Support If you’re nervous about phoning the Hotline is not the only way to contact BGU to get your Clearing questions answered. You can also directly talk to members of the Enquiries Team through WhatsApp on 07598142383. Just as with the Hotline you can ask any questions you want and may even be able to secure your place through it. Clearing Open Day If after Clearing you’re still not confident on where you want to study, or if you’ve decided BGU is the place for you, the University will be hosting an open day on Friday 17 August so you can experience BGU first hand. Lecturers will be available to give you a taste of what the courses have to offer and you’ll be to access all the facilities available at BGU including accommodation, gym and leisure spaces along with the impressively stocked Library and university archive. Open Day is the best way to learn more about BGU and you can book your place by following this link.
