BGU Students Help Local School Pupils to Prepare for Higher Education
Education Studies students at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) have been working alongside PhD students from the University of Lincoln to help prepare local school pupils for Higher Education and build their research skills. The ‘Research Higher’ Project, coordinated by the cross-county LiNCHigher programme, is designed to develop research skills in Year 12 pupils and provide them with additional experience that will benefit them if they choose to go onto Higher Education. Over the course of the workshops held throughout the school term the pupils have been carrying out research into perspectives on Higher Education with BGU students supporting their learning as research mentors. Dr Helen Hendry, Programme Leader for Education Studies at BGU, discussed why the Education team were keen to be part of the project: “It has been really exciting to work on this first time project that has provided both our students and local school pupils with some fantastic opportunities. "The year 12 pupils, who were an absolutely fantastic and engaging group, gain a research qualification for completing the project along with a window into what life at university could be like. Lecturer’s Collaborative Research Published in Healthcare Journal
Nicki Walsh, Senior lecturer (and Programme Lead for Health and Social Care) in the School of Social Science at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), has been published alongside Rachael Mason, Practice Placement Development Worker at the University of Lincoln, for their collaborative evaluation of management placements for nursing students in UK general practice. General Practice is facing a shortage of nurses and it can be difficult to recruit and retain staff. Nursing students need exposure to Primary Care nursing roles if they are to consider them in their future career and to develop the skills needed for this environment. To help combat this shortage and boost opportunities a study was designed to explore the experiences and perceptions of students on their final placement in general practice. The collected data was then thematically analysed and three themes were derived from the data: myth busting, the teaching and learning environment, and attaining competency. This work continues with the local Primary Care services with a Health Education England funded project with Lincs West CCG and Lincolnshire STP which is piloting training posts for Nurses new to General Practice. This will be supported by BGU in terms of Educational provision, consultation and advice as well as evaluation. The evaluation can be found in the journal ‘Primary Healthcare’ volume 28, issue 7 (34-41. doi: 10.7748/phc.2018.e1443). Lincoln Teenage Christmas Markets hailed a resounding success
BG Futures, the Careers, Employability and Enterprise arm of Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) put on not one, but two Teenage Market events over the weekend with both proving a resounding success. Saturday’s market took place in the City Square Co-op while Sunday’s market took place as part of the Christmas Extravaganza at BGU. Both offered an exciting array of unique and eye-catching stalls, along with performances from the BGSU Dance Society as well as resident DJ on the Sunday. Becky Goodman, Enterprise Development Manager at BGU, was delighted to see the whole Teenage Market community come together to make both events a success: “Both events were extremely successful for our traders and performers, and it was great to see the community come out and support us. “I am thankful, once again to Lincolnshire Co-op for providing us with such a welcoming indoor space during the colder months, to BGSU Dance society for performing, and to the BG Futures team for giving up their weekend to run two fantastic events. “We also had a resident DJ, Luke with us on Sunday and this proved a great hit – I am hopeful that we can bring Luke on board again during the warmer months when we are outside in The Cornhill and City Square, as live performance always further enhances our events.” The next market takes place in the City Square Co-op on the 9th February. BGU Touring Exhibition Arrives at the Stonebow Ahead of Centenary Event
Bishop Grosseteste University’s (BGU) ‘Votes for Women’ touring exhibition will be on public show at the historic Stonebow, Lincoln, on Thursday 13 December 2018, 10am to 3pm, courtesy of City of Lincoln Council. The exhibition, ‘Vote100: A Lincolnshire View of Women’s Suffrage', charts the story of the campaign for the vote, locally and nationally. The content also includes some new material on the strengthening of the role of women in local politics in Lincoln. The exhibition was first developed in partnership with Lincoln Central Library, and has since been on tour in locations in the city and in North Kesteven. The content has been designed by staff and recent students of BGU, together with the input of Lincoln Central Library staff and other partners and contributors. Dr Andrew Jackson, Historian and Head of Research at BGU, emphasised the significance of the exhibition: "It is a privilege and a symbolic opportunity to place our Vote100 exhibition in the historic centre of city politics on this important date. The campaign for the vote for women was a very long and hard-fought one, demanding great commitment and remarkable personal sacrifice. The story, which includes the role of women of the county, is a very inspiring one for present times" Sian Hope Johnson MA, recent BGU English Literature student, who has also been involved in the exhibition's curation added: "This year's celebrations of the centenary of Women's suffrage have been immense. To be able to add Lincolnshire’s women into the narrative has been an honour. The exhibition tells the story of the fight for Women's suffrage in Lincolnshire, but, for me, it tells of the struggle, determination and perseverance of women county wide. I am proud, more than ever, to be a Lincolnshire Woman" Following its appearance in the Stonebow, ‘Vote100’ returns to Lincoln Central Library on Friday 14 December where, alongside another BGU exhibition 'Celebrating Women's Football: Past and Present', it will form part of the celebration of the centenary of the 1918 General Election, when many women were able to exercise the vote for the first time. Bishop Grosseteste University Appoint New Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Professor Scott Fleming has been appointed to the post of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU). He will co-ordinate all aspects of academic life and lead a programme to deliver change and create impact. Currently the Executive Dean: Research, Knowledge Exchange and External Engagement, Professor Fleming has been at BGU since April 2018. Having worked at the Universities of Brighton and Gloucestershire as well as, most recently, Cardiff Metropolitan University, he is an experienced academic and has held the roles of Programme Director, Head of School, Academic Dean, Director of Research at school level, and University Director of Research and Graduate Studies. Announcing the appointment the Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice-Chancellor of BGU, praised the impact Professor Fleming’s expertise could have on the University’s community: “I am delighted that Scott emerged as the successful candidate from an international pool of applicants. He brings with him substantial experience of the sector but has also gained a knowledge of the internal environment in the short time he has been working here. "His expertise and approach will take us to the next stage in our strategic development and I look forward to working with him in this new capacity.” For Professor Fleming, the opportunity to help lead BGU’s future progression is a thrilling prospect: “This is an exciting time for the University as we prepare for the launch of a new corporate strategy. We have ambitious plans and I’m delighted to have been given this fantastic opportunity to help shape a bright and prosperous future for BGU.” Scott is Professor of Sport and Leisure Studies and has published over 100 outputs. He has been Chair of the Leisure Studies Association (2004-2009) and a Managing Editor of Leisure Studies (2010-2016). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. BGU Apprentice Shortlisted for Public Sector Award
Andrea Riggall, Apprentice Partnerships Assistant at Bishop Grosseteste University, was shortlisted for this year’s Public Sector Service Compact Higher Apprentice of the Year award 2018. Andrea is a Higher Business and Professional Administration apprentice working within the Partnership Development Team at BGU. Her apprenticeship training is being delivered by BGU as part of the introduction of apprenticeship provision both to internal staff and external students. In addition to being shortlisted, Andrea made it to the final three in a category that saw significant numbers of nominations from across the county. The judging panel, compromising representatives from across Lincolnshire's Apprenticeship and public sector provisions, noted the high quality of the work Andrea had undertaken and the institution wide impact it has had in supporting training for staff from a range of areas and departments across the University. Following the judging process finalists and award winners were presented with certificates at a ceremony on Friday 30th November by Lincoln MP Karen Lee. In Spring 2019 Andrea and Nadine Chapman (another BGU apprentice – Advanced Management) hope to share their experience of being an apprentice within BGU during an Erasmus trip to Cyprus. BG Futures Businesses pull on their Christmas jumpers for a great cause
Staff and businesses from BG Futures at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) were full of festive cheer as they joined thousands of people up and down the UK by pulling on a Christmas jumper for a great cause. The Christmas Jumper Day initiative (which raises funds for Save the Children UK to create a brighter future for children) helps bring essential food, healthcare, education, and protection to millions of children around the world who are missing out. Becky Goodman, Enterprise Development Manager, was delighted to see the BG Futures team and tenants come together in support of the charity: “Initiatives like this are incredibly important especially during the festive period so it’s been fantastic to see so many of our team and tenants support it. "A huge thank you must also go to BG Futures administrator Cassie Rainey for organising and promoting the initiative” The BG Futures team would like to extend their thanks to all that supported their event, and furthermore encourage others to donate £2 to wear their favourite Christmas jumper over the festive period. Federation of Small Businesses aims to help BA Business Students achieve their ambitions
Students on the BA (Hons) Business course at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) recently enjoyed a guest lecture from David Thorpe; Development Manager at the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). The FSB are ‘experts in business, and offer members a wide range of vital business services including advice, financial expertise, support and a powerful voice in government. The FSB’s mission is to help smaller businesses achieve their ambitions. Currently first year BA (Hons) Business students are looking at the impact of the business environment on Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs), and how to access business support as part of their Business Fundamentals module. David’s lecture was therefore a great opportunity for the students to gain a deeper insight into what the FSB can do to support businesses, and furthermore; the structure and composition of organisations operating in the UK economy. Becky Goodman, Module Leader on the BA Business course, explained why guest lectures form an essential part of the course: “Guest lectures are a great way for students to keep up to date with what is happening in the world of business and work, especially with regard to specialist areas such as business support.” All BGU students have access to Business and Enterprise support and guidance through engaging with the onsite Business and Enterprise Centre; BG Futures. ‘Echoes of Contempt’ within Church history explored at book launch
Last week Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) hosted the public launch of ‘Echoes of Contempt’, the latest book from Methodist minister the Reverend Bruce Thompson. Covering centuries of religious history, ‘Echoes of Contempt’ explores Jew Hatred, especially in relationship to the Christian Church, from the time of the early Church to today. The launch, held in the BGU Chapel, opened with introductions and reflections from local Jewish and Christian leaders. These were followed by an interview with the Reverend Bruce Thompson led by BBC Radio Lincolnshire presenter Rod Whiting. Attending the event Mark Plater, Senior Lecturer in Theology at BGU, commented: "Bruce has provided valuable input on this topic to my Holocaust Education module for many years now, and it is great to see his ideas and passion now summarised in book form. “The text is a well written, but hard-hitting read, and I commend it wholeheartedly."
