Bishop Grosseteste University announced as a partner for Imperial War Museums’ £2.5m art commissioning programme Call for Veterans
The project being led by BGU invites serving and former members of the British Armed Forces who were deployed to Afghanistan to group art therapy workshops. In these sessions, veterans will explore what ‘home’ meant to them whilst serving in operating bases in Afghanistan and what it means to them now. A professional artist will be commissioned to work alongside the project team to create artwork that draws inspiration from the veterans’ experiences. Combined with the veterans’ art, the commissioned artwork will form part of a major new contemporary art exhibition that will explore the personal stories of the conflict in Afghanistan. As part of our wider research project, the team would also like to speak to any serving or former members of the British Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan and are interested in sharing their experiences of operating bases. Building on over 100 years of contemporary art commissioning by IWM, this new initiative continues the vision and reach of 14-18 NOW, the official UK arts programme for the First World War centenary, and has been made possible thanks to the success of Peter Jackson’s critically acclaimed film They Shall Not Grow Old, co-commissioned by IWM and 14-18 NOW. A share of the film’s royalties – £2.5 million – will see investment in artists and arts experiences as IWM partners with 20 cultural organisations and 22 artists from across the UK. The fully funded commissions will each be inspired by the heritage of conflict. Dr Derwin Gregory, Programme Leader for Archaeology and Heritage of BGU, says: “I am excited to be working with serving and former members of the British Armed Forces, in partnership with IWM, to create a major contemporary art exhibition that will allow veterans the opportunity to share their stories of life within operating bases in Afghanistan”. Diane Lees, Director-General of IWM, says: “IWM is delighted to be working in close partnership with such a breadth of UK organisations on this ambitious programme of art commissioning. After a challenging couple of years for the arts sector, we hope that the unprecedented opportunities enabled by the IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund will kick-start cultural dialogue as we recover from the wide-reaching impacts of COVID-19”. BGU graduate sets up a social enterprise
Denise has over 40 years’ experience of teaching music and is a BA (Hons) Health and Social Care graduate from BGU. Denise explains “I have been employed for many years in the health and social care sector, working with young people in rehab, supported living and care home residential settings, young people and adults with learning difficulties and those suffering with mental health problems. I am passionate about helping them achieve their goals. I had thought about studying for a degree for years and after a change in personal circumstances decided that it was the right time to embark on the journey. I chose to study at BGU as the location is ideal and the group size relatively small. Any feelings of apprehension about going to university and worrying about being too old or not being able to cope with the work were soon dismissed. I had excellent teaching staff, was made welcome and put at ease. The student group consisted of a variety of ages, and I never once felt out of place. It was a friendly and supportive group. Admittedly at times it was difficult fitting everything in, work, an elderly parent to care for and the ongoing demands of family life; a husband, grown up children and grandchildren! I was determined to get through the whole experience and so pleased I did. I would not have missed it for the world. "Throughout the years I have used music, art and craft to improve wellbeing, build confidence and self-esteem, enabling people to perform and entertain. I believe that the arts can have a lasting and powerful effect on an individual's health. They can be a fun way to socialise and make friends.” Denise said “the support I received from Sarah at BG Futures has been extremely valuable and important. It has helped and encouraged me to continue and develop the confidence needed to run my own business. OUR ECLECTIC ARTS is available for anyone aged over 18 years and caters for all abilities. The service is bought to clients whether in their own home, residential or community setting. At present I am concentrating on a 30-mile radius covering Lincoln to Louth as well as coastal areas. "Regardless of age, if anyone is thinking of starting their own business my advice is to ask for help and advice and to talk through your ideas with friends and family. Do your market research to offer something different and go for it. To encourage others, I always say, if I can do it, so can you.” Sarah adds “Denise’s market research revealed that there are a limited number of organisations delivering wide-ranging art activities, in the community, to individuals that have difficulties accessing services. OUR ECLECTIC ARTS is dedicated to offering a broader range of activities within the Arts. Denise has a client centric approach and a genuine interest in improving people’s lives. Initial Teacher Training at Bishop Grosseteste University re-accredited by the Department for Education
The Vice-Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University, The Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil commented: “This institution has been providing teacher education in the City of Lincoln for over 160 years; we currently work in partnership with over 600 schools and Colleges, constantly adapting to meet changing priorities. “I am delighted we have been awarded this accreditation in order for us to continue to educate teachers of the highest quality for this region and beyond into the future. The teaching profession is central to the building and re-building of societies and BGU is a major strategic partner in this endeavour. In relation to the response submitted in BGU’s application for a high-quality, evidence-based trainee curriculum, the Department for Education feedback stated “The response fully meets all the criteria set out in the question and outlines how the applicant will provide high-quality ITT and benefit trainee outcomes and gives assurance that it will be of a sufficiently high quality, meeting all of the quality requirements and minimum time allocations. BGU Tennyson Poetry Award 2023
Following what is now a tradition at BGU, the English team would like to invite you all to celebrate the power of language through poetry this spring with the BGU Tennyson Poetry Award 2023. Why not take the opportunity during this April break to enjoy some poetry by venturing into poems by April born poets such as Maya Angelou, William Wordsworth, Charlotte Bronte and William Shakespeare, for example, or writing some lines of your own to seize a moment or reflect on the world outside or inside you. If inspired, we would like students and staff to consider taking part in BGU Tennyson Poetry Award 2023. To do so, write lines and lyrics in response to 'Flower in the crannied wall' by Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892). You can find some of its lines carved on the plinth of Tennyson’s statue here in Lincoln, on the grounds of the Cathedral. Inspired by the Lincolnshire-born Victorian Poet Laureate, the Tennyson Poetry Award asks you to submit an original poem in response to a poem by Tennyson. Your poem may respond to Tennyson’s ‘Flower in the crannied wall’ in multiple and varied ways, without limits in terms of form, style, and lyrical language. It was a very enriching experience for those who attended: and we also all learnt how to compose a book spine poem and about the importance of personal triads. During the event, we also announced and had the pleasure to enjoy a poem that was awarded the Tennyson Poetry Award 2022, ‘A Word from Amphitrite’ by Daisy Hardwick Shaw. ‘A Word from Amphitrite’, is a poem by third-year English Literature student, Daisy Hardwick Shaw. Her original poem was inspired by an extract from ‘Ulysses’ by Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) and, with her permission, we share with you here: ‘A Word from Amphitrite’ by Daisy Hardwick Shaw -
