BGU Vice-Chancellor: Social-Distancing is tough but we all need to work together to protect the vulnerable
Over the last week we have been repeatedly encouraged by the Government and our emergency services to practise social distancing in an effort to reduce the transmission of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Unfortunately, over the weekend we saw many examples of people ignoring this advice in favour of visiting the country’s seaside towns and country villages. To a point this is understandable, humans are by nature social creatures, and the idea of being locked down and not seeing friends and loved ones for the foreseeable future may seem upsetting. However, the potential dangers of ignoring this advice far outweigh the social implications. Even if you are not showing symptoms, or are unlikely to suffer due to the virus, you may still pose a risk to those who are more vulnerable. This is one of the main reasons that we decided to move learning and teaching at BGU online for the foreseeable future. It was not an easy decision but I am confident it was the best one to make for the health and wellbeing of our students and staff. I implore every member of our community to follow the Government and Public Health England’s advice on social distancing. I am hopeful that we may soon start to see the end of current circumstances but this is only possible if we all make hard choices and work together. Remember that following the advice does not mean you have to completely isolate yourself, we are lucky to live in a technological age with an amazing array of digital communication options available to us. As an institution we are also working hard to craft innovative systems, such as our new Library Live Chat, to ensure that members of community are able to stay in regular contact with us and can continue to access support and guidance at any time. As I said when we made the difficult decision to transition to online learning, I look forward to welcoming everyone back onto campus as soon as possible, until then please stay safe and continue to protect the health of yourselves and those around you. Dr Joanne Smith
Senior Lecturer in Health and Social Care Jo is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Social Care, teaching on the BA (Hons) Health and Social Care degree that she has been involved in developing. She has taught predominantly on social work and health and social care courses, as well as other undergraduate and postgraduate courses, for many years at a variety of UK universities, including University of Manchester, Plymouth University and Nottingham Trent University before joining Bishop Grosseteste University in the summer of 2015. Prior to becoming an academic she worked as a social worker in the drug and mental health field in both voluntary and statutory settings, working with people with dual diagnosis, as well as other difficulties such as HIV. Jo’s MA and PhD research focused on criminal records and their relevance in terms of employment as social workers, and the decision-making regarding risk to service users. This area of research is ongoing. Academic Teaching Jo has taught social work at BA and MA levels at different universities, and been the course leader for a social work degree. She has also taught Health and Social Care at two other universities, and taught on other degrees such a Doctor in Clinical Psychology, MA and BA Criminology and MA Human Givens. -

Its focus is on developing knowledge and understanding of sport, and physical education in its broader sociocultural context. You will be introduced to a range of central, yet diverse, theoretical approaches to the study of society that have been and are still developing within Sociology. The course will provide a critical and reflexive understanding of modern and contemporary social and sociological theories. The degree will explore research issues and debates surrounding notions of policy, inclusion, deviance, equity and identity in relation to sports coaching and physical education. -

Virtual collaboration: Health & Social Care Students and the University of Szczecin
Second year Health & Social Care BSc (Hons) and Masters students from BGU took part in a virtual collaboration with Social Work students from the University of Szczecin (Poland). The exchange was via Microsoft Teams and both groups explored a number of health and social care related issues from the perspective of the UK and Poland. This helped their understanding of the systems in both countries, with student led discussions revealing a divergence between the systems in the two counties. For example, the funding mechanisms and organisational structures related to provision and the distinct differences around referral processes and social care provision. Students from BGU and Szczecin undertook presentations, namely; Sam Williams (MA in Health and Social Care Leadership, BGU) presented on the relatively new concept of social prescribing in England and how this works in Lincolnshire. Pat Chuchro (BSc (Hons) Health and Social care, BGU) talked about her role in the NHS, having moved to the UK over 13 years ago from Poland. Pat’s insight into both healthcare systems was illuminating and helps support learning both at BGU and Szczecin. Natalia Niciecka (Social Work student, Szczecin) also gave an informative overview of the Polish social cares system. You can read one of the completed evaluations of the virtual exchange here.
