  2. Sustainability and Ethical Practice
    The most senior manager with responsibility for environmental sustainability at the University is Tom Dannatt, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Operations) (tom.dannatt@bishopg.ac.uk). Other members of staff with an environmental sustainability remit include Director of People and Infrastructure Jonathan Cheeseman (jonathan.cheeseman@bishopg.ac.uk), Chief Estates and Facilities Officer Brendan Pritchard (brendan.pritchard@bishopg.ac.uk), and Campus Operations & Accommodation Manager Rachel Crane (rachel.crane@bishopg.ac.uk).   3. Bishop Grosseteste University celebrates excellent National Student Survey results
    For three subjects in particular BGU placed in the top ten in the UK, with Literature and English finishing in first place with a satisfaction score of 100%, Sport Science ranking second with 96%, and Health Studies rising to 10th nationally with a 90% satisfaction score. The NSS is an annual survey for undergraduate students that invites them to share feedback on their university experience. Around half a million students are asked to give their opinions relating to various aspects of their course, including teaching quality, assessment and feedback, and learning community. The results help prospective students make informed choices about their education and provide important data for universities and colleges to improve their student experience. The latest survey results show BGU has made substantial improvements in ranking across all NSS core question categories. In the 2022 survey, BGU is ranked in the top 30 for eight out of nine categories – including first for timely feedback, third for student assessment and feedback, and sixth for learning resources. Satisfaction with access to learning resources has also improved, with satisfaction with library resources climbing to 4th, and access to course specific resources rising to 14th. Other highlights also include Education and Teaching Training course areas, placed in the top 25 which is their highest ever ranking to date, and Childhood and Youth Studies reporting above sector satisfaction rates. Rob Boast, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Students) at BGU, said: “The community at BGU prides itself on ensuring that students are a name not a number, and we’re pleased that so many of our final year undergraduates, who experienced all the turbulence of learning throughout the pandemic, have shared such positive feedback about their time with us. “As a small university we are perfectly positioned to offer our students a personal and tailored experience, so it is encouraging that areas such as academic support, assessment and feedback, learning community and student voice have reported high satisfaction rates. “The sharp rise in our ranking across several categories reflects a lot of hard work from our staff across all departments, working collaboratively to provide a student-focussed learning experience, and we will continue with our ambitious plans to expand on our outstanding record for student progression, achievement and employability on a national level.”
  4. Initial Teacher Training at Bishop Grosseteste University re-accredited by the Department for Education
    The Vice-Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University, The Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil commented: “This institution has been providing teacher education in the City of Lincoln for over 160 years; we currently work in partnership with over 600 schools and Colleges, constantly adapting to meet changing priorities. “I am delighted we have been awarded this accreditation in order for us to continue to educate teachers of the highest quality for this region and beyond into the future. The teaching profession is central to the building and re-building of societies and BGU is a major strategic partner in this endeavour. In relation to the response submitted in BGU’s application for a high-quality, evidence-based trainee curriculum, the Department for Education feedback stated “The response fully meets all the criteria set out in the question and outlines how the applicant will provide high-quality ITT and benefit trainee outcomes and gives assurance that it will be of a sufficiently high quality, meeting all of the quality requirements and minimum time allocations.   5. The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 ranks Bishop Grosseteste University fourth for social inclusion and teaching quality
    The guide, published by The Times and Sunday Times, evaluates factors such as student satisfaction, degree completion rates, and graduate employment prospects, to produce a guide of 132 higher education institutions that allows prospective students to make an informed choice about their education. In the 2023 edition, BGU ranked fourth for teaching quality and 13th for the overall student experience. With data from the recent National Students Survey (NSS) informing their rankings, the guide commented on the ‘extraordinary turnaround in rates of student satisfaction.’ The guide also ranked BGU fourth nationally in their Social Inclusion Ranking, which measures the proportion of students from whole sections of society including disadvantaged backgrounds. In a further breakdown for social inclusion, BGU is also fourth for recruiting students from areas with a low uptake of higher education, fifth for the number of students in receipt of the student disability allowance, and sixth for the recruitment of students who are the first in their family to attend university. The tables for subject rankings also showed an increase in ranks for Education, English and Psychology at BGU. The Rev’d Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice-Chancellor of BGU, said: “We are incredibly pleased with the positive results in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023. “Being ranked fourth for both teaching quality and social inclusion is testament to the high-quality provision that our students receive. We are delighted that BGU’s long-standing commitment to ensuring education is accessible to students irrespective of their socio-economic background has been recognised.”

    Bishop Grosseteste University has secured its first ever Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with local charity Lincolnshire Community & Voluntary Service.
  8. Welcome Week 2022 roundup from CELT
    As part of the Freshers’ Marketplace, CELT set up a stall introducing students to the support provided by the team. Here, CELT members briefly explained the services of Learning Development, Digital Learning and Student Engagement, as well as promoting organised activities. This year saw the introduction of events not only during enrolment week, but also two weeks post-enrolment. The aim of this was to maintain engagement with students for not only enrolment week, but for the following weeks. Events were advertised via the Welcome Week programme, Blackboard and posters were displayed around campus. CELT decided to lay on a greenscreen and mini carnival for enrolment week. Greenscreen - students visited CELT to have their picture taken, with a background of their choice, either as an individual or with friends. The photo was then put into a keyring as a keepsake which the students collected a little later. One of the challenges of this was the clothing choice of students. Unfortunately, those who turned up in a green top disappeared into the background! However, this added to the humour of the event. Mini carnival – thankfully the weather was on our side so this took place in the courtyard outside CELT. Many traditional games including tin-can-alley and hook-a-duck, were available for students to participate in, with the aim to win a prize. Hook-a-duck was extremely successful and proved to be a hit with students. This was in part, due to the ‘CELT generated’ storm which made the game more difficult but definitely more fun. Those who took part, including the Vice-Chancellor, will know what this means! Follow-on activities On the following two Wednesdays (28 September and 5 October), and at the request of the Students’ Union to continue student engagement post enrolment, further events were laid on by CELT. On each Wednesday, the green screen continued to make an appearance, but this was accompanied by the CELT Escape Room. In teams of a maximum of 6, students had to answer puzzles in 4 rooms, each room giving a number to a padlock. Only on correctly working out the padlock number, were they able to escape (and win some goodies). A varied level of help was provided by CELT staff but thanks to persistence and determination shown by our students, they managed to escape! The carnival will be making a reappearance on 9 November in the Students’ Union building, between 12 noon and 3pm. Come and join us for more fun and goodies. See you soon! CELT
  9. English at BGU celebrate top NSS rank
    In the recent National Student Survey, BGU placed top in the UK for student satisfaction in Literature in English ranked top in the UK.
  10. Carers’ Conference 2022
    Earlier this month, we were delighted to host the 'Engaging, identifying and supporting carers within education and employment learning' Conference. This was a joint collaboration between BGU's Health and Social Care Community and Every-One, with an aim to raise the profile of unpaid carers. “An unpaid carer is described as someone who looks after a relative or friend who due to ill health, physical or mental illness, disability, frailty or addiction cannot manage without support” - Lincolnshire County Council A variety of guest speakers spoke throughout the day, along with BGU staff and students, all of whom shared their experience of being a carer. Over 80 delegates participated from a number of different healthcare providers in Lincolnshire. Representatives from Lincolnshire Coop, Lincolnshire County Council, Every-One, Carers First, Kisimul School, Lincolnshire Partnership Foundation Trust and North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, were all in attendance, alongside our Health and Social care students. The students played a vital role at the conference, in terms of co-hosting and facilitating workshops. Speaking about the conference, The Rev’d Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice-Chancellor of BGU, said: “As an institution we take carers very seriously and have obtained the Carers’ Award on repeated occasions which is in recognition of both the work with our students and staff who have caring responsibilities. It was good to have BGU being described as a centre of excellence for this particular group, and it was pleasing to hear so many positive comments from delegates and organisers about our students’ engagement with this as they will be the professionals with a role in taking the agenda forward as future innovators” Thank you to everyone who participated and attended in the conference.
