“Is this some kind of joke?” – BGU Present an Evening of Stand-Up Comedy with Tribute Artist Lee Lard
Join us at 7.30pm on Thursday 17 May for an evening of comedy as the one and only Peter Kay Tribute Act – Lee Lard (peterkaytribute.co.uk) – performs in The Venue at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU). Now in his 10th year and with over 2500 performances under his belt, Lee Lard is still being voted the most popular comedy tribute act in the UK. His outstanding tribute to Bolton's funny man Peter Kay has been enjoyed by thousands of fans throughout the UK and abroad and is as popular now as ever continuing to sell out wherever he goes! With a show packed full of Kay highlights from ‘Phoenix Nights’ to ‘Max and Paddy’ and beyond, Lee appeals to an audience of all ages, delivering his own hilarious ‘Peter Kay’ style of stand-up comedy. Lee started as a comic back in 1993, going pro in 2000, making his name in the early days as a part of comedy duo ‘Lean & Lard’. Historian Tracy Borman Joins BGU for an Evening of Elizabethan Exploration
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) are delighted to welcome Tracy Borman (www.tracyborman.co.uk), renowned historian, Chief Executive of the Heritage Education Trust and Joint Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces, back to Lincoln on Thursday 31 May 2018 for an evening delving deep into the riveting politics of Elizabeth I and her court. ‘Elizabeth’s Women: The hidden story of the Virgin Queen’ will explore the fascinating relationships that Elizabeth I had with the women who influenced her most. From her scandalous mother, Anne Boleyn, to her greatest rival, Mary Queen of Scots, and the ‘flouting wenches’ who served her at court, they all show Elizabeth in a surprising new light. Born and raised just outside of Lincoln, Tracey Borman is widely recognised as an expert on Tudor history with a collection of best-selling books and celebrated TV series. Her knowledge of Elizabethan England will undoubtedly ensure a compelling discussion on one of England’s most captivating monarchs. BGU Student's Wartime Drawings go on Display in Lincoln’s new International Bomber Command Centre
Two cartoons, drawn in 1940 and 1941 during the height of the Blitz by former Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) student Betty Carpenter, are set to feature in the ‘Home Fronts’ gallery at Lincoln's new International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC). Due to open to the public Saturday 27 January, the centre will serve as a place for the recognition and remembrance of Bomber Command. Providing the most comprehensive record of the Command in the world, the IBCC ensures that generations to come can learn of their vital role in protecting the freedom we enjoy today. Joining the IBCC’s unique records, Betty’s two drawings show improvements made to the air raid shelters underneath BGU’s (then Lincoln Training College) Constance Stewart Hall between July 1940 and July 1941. Originally published in the college magazine at the time (copies of which continue to be held in the Library Archive at BGU) they were brought to the attention of the IBCC by Dr. Claire Hubbard-Hall, senior lecturer in History at BGU, who felt their level of detail and historical significance made them more then deserving of a home in the new memorial. In order to gain permission for the images to be displayed Betty's descendants were traced and contacted, and were pleased to agree to Betty's work being used in this way. In addition to going out on display to visitors at the IBCC the images will also be permanently preserved in the IBCC Digital Archive. Betty, who was from Cudworth near Barnsley, was born in 1921 and was a student at BGU between 1939 and 1941. One of the subjects she took whilst studying was Advanced Drawing, which (unsurprisingly) she passed with distinction in her Final Certificate Examination in 1941. She married Harry Bell (a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve) in August 1942 but sadly was widowed just four months later at the age of 21, when Harry was killed during a training exercise near Kinloss. She married again, after the War, and died in 2000, aged 78. Although the IBCC is not officially opening until Saturday, you can get a sneak peek at Betty’s unique drawings both in their original format in our archives or on our heritage boards which you can find on our campus outside Constance Stewart Hall. -
A Raucous Evening of Living History at BGU
Following the success of the sell-out ‘Sex and the Tudors’ event, the world renowned Lesley Smith (curator of Tutbury Castle) returns to The Venue at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) on Thursday 12 April to bring another of history’s risqué characters to life; the always indomitable and often scandalous Nell Gwynne. For many people all Nell Gwynne is known for is being the mistress of Charles II (as well as a successful orange seller). Lesley’s show aims to shed a new light on the real Nell Gwynne, a courageous victory for English womanhood who prevailed against all the odds to become a star of the London stage and beloved of the King of England. ‘An Evening with Mistress Nell Gwynne’ will not only give you the chance to meet the pretty, witty Nell in fantastic costume but also to laugh and cry with her as she shares her fascinating and titillating life with you. BGU Students' Union to be First in the UK to Offer New Apprenticeship
Bishop Grosseteste University Students’ Union (BGSU) will be the first students' union in the country to offer their Sabbatical Officers industry recognised apprenticeships. From September the President and Vice-President of BGSU will undertake Level 2 Apprenticeships in Team Leadership funded by Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) alongside their official duties. The main responsibility of the Sabbatical Officers is to be a representative for all students, leading a volunteer executive team in enhancing the student experience at BGU. The apprenticeship programme is designed to upskill and support them, providing training and a professional framework to guide their decisions and leadership. In addition to underpinning their efforts at BGU, the apprenticeships will help set the officers up for life and employment after their terms have ended. For Abigail Rogers, BGSU Manager, the opportunity to both encourage the success of the hard work being carried out by the Students' Union team and offer an improved professional future for those taking part was not to be missed: “The projects undertaken by the SU team here at BGU are of immense importance and we wanted to ensure that the individuals leading those efforts have all the skills needed to be successful. We are delighted with the support we’ve received from the university in breaking new ground and allowing us to upskill and enhance our team.” Ben Kinross, Apprentice Engagement Officer at the National Society of Apprentices, was pleased to see BGSU supporting apprenticeships: “It is very exciting to be involved with BGSU as they become the first student union in the UK to take this step in supporting the innovative professional development of their team. I look forward to seeing them lead more unions down this new path”. Bishop Grosseteste University Celebrates New Apprentices
Earlier this year Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) launched their first cohort of apprentices on Higher Management and Higher Business courses. As part of National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) BGU took the opportunity to celebrate their new apprentices as they looked back on the first month of their programme. Joining the apprentices to discuss their exciting new projects were BGU Vice Chancellor Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, Ben Kinross from the National Society of Apprentices as well as representatives from Lincoln Council. Speaking at the event Peter Neil said he was excited to see apprenticeships gaining a greater reputation: “It is fantastic that apprenticeships are now being recognised for their importance and relevance to professional progression. Continued personal and professional development is highly valued at BGU and I’m delighted to see my colleagues embracing this opportunity”. The new cohort of apprentices are all undertaking Higher Apprenticeships in either Management or Business with Professional Administration. As current BGU staff they are building the placements around their existing roles but Jayne Ellis, on the Business with Professional Administration Course, was keen that the idea of balancing the two responsibilities shouldn’t deter prospective apprentices: “This has been a great opportunity so I would encourage anyone else who is thinking about undertaking an apprenticeship at BGU to go for it as the support so far has been very good” BGU plan to run a full suite of different apprenticeships in the coming months, all designed to upskill people within the Lincolnshire area aiding them in their professional development and have begun linking up with local employers to offer a range of exciting opportunities. BGU Students Forge International Connections in Finland
A delegation of Business (Team Entrepreneurship) students from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) travelled to Finland last month to meet with fellow entrepreneurs from across the globe. Members of Kinetic BGU Ltd., the company run by BGU students as part of their course, began their visit with a two day workshop in Tampere with Proakatemia, a local Team Academy. In addition to presenting their projects to each other the two teams shared business advice and solutions before examining the potential for joint ventures in the future. As a result one such venture has already been put in motion and BGU student Max Bouer will begin working alongside members of Proakatemia to organise international events for students in the coming months. Following the workshop the trip culminated in a ‘Team 4 Learning’ event, which celebrated 25 year of the Team Academy Initiative. Held in the city of Jyvaskyla, the birth place of the Team Academy Initiative, the event offered an opportunity for international networking with team academies from across the globe in attendance. Beth Tidswell, Director of Kinetic BGU, heralded the trip as an immense success: “Our time in Finland was an amazing experience that is already having a positive impact on our work here at BGU. Not only did we get to surround ourselves with new ideas and information, we’ve also been asked to consult with teams in Germany who are looking to set up their own programmes like ours.” Since becoming a part of the BGU degree portfolio, the Business (Team Entrepreneurship) course has become well regarded and BGU are delighted to have been asked to host the next international Team 4 Learning meeting in 2019. BGU Students Recognised at BG Futures Employability Awards
Hardworking students were celebrated at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) on Thursday at the annual BG Futures Employability Awards. Designed to encourage students to branch out and widen their skill sets and experiences ahead of joining the work force; the Employability Award is given to those involved in extra-curricular activities while undertaking courses at BGU. Students can accrue points that decide their award level based on: Volunteering activities Attending business networking events Taking part in Employability workshops Creating a piece of written work reflecting on techniques to improve employability 12 students received the award this year; Emma Stanbridge, a final year English Literature student who passed with distinction, explained why she felt working towards the award was so important: “I felt it was really important to engage with every opportunity BGU had to offer. Working towards the Employability Award has not only helped me to articulate my employability skills, it has also given me a chance to apply them in professional contexts which is incredibly beneficial as I head to the end of my degree” Presenting the awards, Dr Rob Boast, Executive Dean Learning, Teaching & Student Engagement (blog.bishopg.ac.uk/blog/new-executive-dean), was keen to impress both his own and the University’s understanding of the hard work carried out by the students: “This award recognises a level of dedication and commitment above and beyond what is expected at degree level. Bishop Grosseteste University Unveils a Suite of New Courses
Throughout our 150 years of teaching excellence everyone at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has strived to be at the forefront of innovation in higher education, ensuring our courses continue to meet the needs of a constantly evolving student market. The courses are highly regarded by both students and inspectors for their quality and we are excited to add four new Master's level degree options as well as a new Post Graduate Certificate to our ever-growing portfolio. MA in Mathematics Education: Designed for individuals teaching mathematics across all phases including Primary, Secondary and Further Education. The course will give students the tools to refine their own professional practice, to study the latest innovations in mathematics teaching, and to compare international systems of Mathematics Education. MSc in Wellbeing and Learning in Teaching: Suitable for a range of professionals within a variety of educational settings. Innovative Health & Social Care Forums Continue at BGU
The Health & Social Care Team at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in collaboration with Terry Vine, Deputy Chief Nurse at West Lincs CCG, continued their programme of monthly forums for General Practice Nurses (GPNs) with a session focusing on ‘Urgent and Emergency Care in General Practice’. The need for an understanding of urgent and emergency care is being seen more often in General Practice due to increases in condition complexity, access to services and general frailty of the populations served. Central to the forum was a workshop session led by David Hickman from ‘Lives’, which focused on many of the skills for prehospital care and condition deterioration. Supported by over 700 volunteers, doctors, nurses and paramedics, the team at ‘Lives’ are dedicated to being there for the people of Lincolnshire in time of greatest need; delivering immediate high quality care regardless of the location or time of day. In support of the need to enhance the education of General Practice and Primary Care, a consequence of the changing nature of healthcare delivery towards “Care Closer to Home”, BGU plans to launch a new MSc in Primary/Community Care from next year. The course is designed to enhance the nature and quality of provision of care within the Primary/Community care setting in addition to facilitating a wider understanding for professionals currently in the sector as well as those considering a career within Primary/Community provision. Nicki Walsh, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Health & Social Care at BGU, explains why the forums and new course are so important: “Healthcare cannot stand still; as society’s health and social needs continue to evolve, effective education is critical. Continuing professional development is a vital part of this, especially for practitioners who are isolated from their clinical colleagues by virtue of their practice environment. “The monthly forum, established at BGU, is seen as a means to promote knowledge enhancement and exchange around best practice and to provide regular and relevant educational updates. “The new MSc is an exciting opportunity to take the lessons of the forums a step further providing practitioners with a wealth of essential knowledge as well as breaking new ground in the teaching of Health & Social Care.” The forums are an opportunity for often-isolated practice nurses from across Lincoln and surrounding villages to share experiences and develop and enhance skills. Each forum examines a range of General Practice related issues, whilst the latest focused on urgent and emergency care, previous forums looked at issues around Asthma Management, COPD and Mental Health support.
