BGU wins OFS bid to expand apprenticeship provision
BGU is delighted to announce that the University has been successful in securing additional funding as part of a competitive bidding process launched by the Office for Students (OFS), to increase the number of Level 6 degree apprenticeship courses and places available. The OFS have confirmed they will invest £12million in the first wave of three, to support university providers to both increase the number of students and the equality of opportunity within Level 6 apprenticeship programmes. The full article can be viewed here. Apprenticeships and Partnerships Manager Jane Fletcher said: “We are incredibly excited with this outcome and the opportunity this has presented us with. This will enable us now to build upon our already strong foundations and develop two new Degree-Apprenticeship standards – namely Project Manager and Youth Worker, to support our local and regional employer partnerships.” Dr Nick Gee, Dean of Faculty commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded OFS funding to develop these new apprenticeship standards. This represents a fantastic opportunity to grow our apprenticeship provision at BGU, by developing our current expertise.” An implementation project is now underway to develop these programmes and have them available for 2024/25. Employers wishing to express an interest in collaborating with us on this exciting portfolio development should contact apprenticeships@bishopg.ac.uk -

BGU calendar raises money for local cat charity
It's been no secret that Johnty, Bishop Grosseteste University’s famous mascot in previous years, had proven to be a popular resident of the University. Which is why he was brought back for another calendar to raise money for the much loved charity Lincoln Cat Care! Established in 2004 by a group of cat lovers, this local charity relies on donations to rehome strays, cover vet bills, and provide emergency care to felines in need. Trustee for Lincoln Cat Care Liz Truss was presented with the cheque for the £501 by Ian Ferguson from IT (who organised the sales) and Vice Chancellor Karen Stanton. Reprographics Manager, Alan Stacey also kindly last year put the calendar together using photos taken by Ian. Newer feline resident Gizmo, was more than happy to help out with the process of getting the calendar designed and printed. In fact, Gizmo makes a special appearance in one of the calendar's months. There are still calendars available for purchase. Please contact johntyuniversitycat@gmail.com to order yours for £3.50. -

Axis Prisoners of War in Lincolnshire
In the summer of 1941, Italian POWs captured in North Africa were brought to Allington (Grantham) to construct a POW camp. Opened in August, this was the first of some twenty camps in Lincolnshire that held Axis POWs between 1941 and 1948. POWs provided a vital source of agricultural labour across the UK, including the famers of Lincolnshire. As their employment expanded, Axis POWs became a feature of the local landscape. With the lifting of the fraternisation ban in December 1946, POWs came into closer contact with the British people and struck up friendships with local families. Not all the POWs returned home and instead opted to settle down in the county. This project explores the presence and legacy of Axis POWs in Lincolnshire during and after the Second World War. The aim is to collect and preserve memories and material associated with them and the various camps, hostels, and sites used to accommodate Axis POWs. BGU thanked for “gorgeous review”
Canadian writer Jordan Scott, winner of awards across Germany, Japan, China, Holland and Italy, has contacted BGU to thank us for a review of his book that appeared in the March edition of our library newsletter, The Four Corners. The review is by our PGCE English subject lead Dr Clare Lawrence and highlights the way his book I talk like a river addresses the issue of dysfluency, especially for pupils. “I’m a huge fan of classroom talk”, Clare confirms. “I stress to my PGCE students how discussions, debates, even disagreements are powerful elements of active learning. However, we must also be sensitive to the fact that for some pupils, speaking is not the most accessible form of communication”. Associate Professor Clare Lawrence has a strong research interest in ’giving voice’ to those who are underheard or underrepresented. “It isn’t those who shout the loudest who always have the most to say”, she suggests. “Jordan Scott articulates so powerfully in his book the experience of living with a stutter. Ultimately, his communication is both stronger and richer for having to overcome a barrier”. Jordan emailed the university to share his appreciation for what he described as a “gorgeous review”, adding, “I ever get around to visiting the UK I'll make sure to let you know”. You can read Clare’s article on page 16 of Volume 5 Issue 1 of Four Corners, which can be accessed here.
